What is Romeo & Juliet about?

Romeo and Juliet is a love story about two main characters who are from rival families. Romeo who is from the Montague family, one of the richest families in Verona, falls in love with Juliet Capulet. She is part of the Capulet family which is the other rich family in Verona. Between the Montagues and the Capulets is big rivalry and mostly hate. They fall in love and get married despite their families hate. Despite the fact that it is true love, the story has a tragic ending.

The Writer:

The writer of Romeo and Juliet is William Shakespeare, born in 1564 and died in 1616, was a well known play writer of London, England. He was born when the Elizabethan Era had just been started, this was a fortunate time in history as this was the moment that literature, poetry and drama fully developed in England. He created his own play writing company between 1585 and 1592 which was named Lord Chamberlain's Men. This company built the Globe Theatre in 1599, where the play of Romeo and Juliet was originally played. Yet, Romeo and Juliet is not Shakespeare's only famous work. He started off by writing comidies and historic plays, but later changed to writing tragedies. Other of his famous tragedies include: Hamlet, Macbeth and Otello.
